From July 11 - 18, 2009 a mission team from St. Andrews Presbyterian Church journeyed to Honduras to engage in Christian ministry in Central America. We took many supplies to augment that sharing, including first aid kits, medication, more than 100 school bags made by our Presbyterian Women, scarves, school supplies, five piƱatas and various other materials. Team members included Leader Nancy Sterling, Matthew Sterling, Jamie Meier, Krys Meier, Marcia Allison, and Pastor Norm Hatter. We were joined by three other team members from Texas and two from Virginia, resulting in an eleven member team..
Before our final departure for this trip, there was a period of some confusion as American Airlines evaluated the political situation in Honduras and cancelled, then rescheduled our flight. Meanwhile, Honduras Outreach Inc., the sponsoring organization was in regular contact with people in the interior, who reassured them all was well away from major urban areas. Given the HOI intelligence, our team prayerfully decided to go on with our planned visit, recognizing the importance to the villagers who expected us. As it turned out, the trip was extremely meaningful as the team was able to build two houses, install four roofs, pour ten cement floors, dig two irrigation trenches, manage a soccer tournament, host a festival for the local village, conduct a health clinic for the village women and hold a comprehensive vacation Bible school for the children. Even though we thought our mission was to show God’s face to the villagers, what all experienced, visitors and villagers alike, was God’s presence in many ways.
